What this checker does

Nutri-Score is a public A–E grade per 100 g or 100 ml. NOVA asks a different question: is this an industrial formulation (group 4) or something closer to kitchen food? One letter is not processing. Use both. Read what Nutri-Score is and what ultra-processed foods are.

Type an EAN/UPC (Israeli codes often start with 729) to pull Open Food Facts. When OFF already has a grade or NOVA group, we show that. If the product is missing, paste the label and we estimate Nutri-Score 2023 (Santé publique France) and a conservative NOVA 4 heuristic from the ingredients.

How to use it in the aisle

Pick two similar items - two yogurts, two granolas, two sauces. Prefer A or B when the choice is close, then read sugar and salt. A D-rated olive oil can still be a good fat. A B-rated snack bar can still be ultra-processed. The SmartEat app scanner logs the serving; this page is for the 10-second shelf check.

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers based on established nutrition science.

What is a Nutri-Score calculator?
It maps energy, sugars, saturated fat, salt, fiber, protein, and fruit/veg per 100 g or 100 ml to a letter from A to E, using the public 2023 algorithm. Barcode grades come from Open Food Facts when present.
Does a good Nutri-Score mean it is not ultra-processed?
No. Nutri-Score scores nutrients. NOVA scores processing. A B-rated snack can still be NOVA 4. That is why this page shows both. See ultra-processed foods.
Can I use this with an Israeli barcode?
Yes. Type the EAN (Israeli codes often start with 729). If Open Food Facts has the product, we fill the table. If not, paste per 100 g from the pack - common for local brands.
Is the NOVA answer official?
Only when Open Food Facts already has a NOVA group. From a pasted ingredients list we flag typical ultra-processed markers (flavourings, emulsifiers, isolates). Short kitchen lists are treated as not UPF. Long ambiguous lists stay “not sure.”
